Mission Statement and History

GVTC Mission Statement

The mission of the Georgia Virtual Technical Connection is to provide support, guidance, and assistance to the state’s Technical Colleges in the design, development, and delivery of distance education and technology based learning initiatives, manage the state level online student application portal, and serve as a conduit for distance and technology enhanced education.

GVTC History

The Georgia Virtual Technical Institute (GVTI) began in 1998 as a grass roots effort of futuristic thinking instructors who envisioned teaching over the Internet.  These instructors suggested the idea to their presidents who then approached Commissioner Kenneth Breeden about online learning. Commissioner Breeden supported the  presidents and instructors in their efforts by appointing Ms. Debbie Dlugolenski as Executive Director of the Department of Technical and Adult Education Online Learning Initiative and a board of presidents to oversee this initiative. GVTI opened in the fall of 1998 with 132 students and 17 online courses.  Because of the choice and convenience online classes offer students, the Georgia Virtual Technical College has grown every year since its inception. In 2010, the name was changed to the Georgia Virtual Technical Connection.
