Welcome to the first edition of the Georgia Virtual Technical College e-newsletter GVTC Velocity – Your Unique Link for Non-Stop Learning. Velocity is your gateway to news about the GVTC online community.  It will highlight best practices, new opportunities and trends, and personal success stories.

Why “non-stop learning?” In today’s competitive workplace, employees need rapid, affordable access to a variety of learning opportunities. That is what we offer students through The Georgia Virtual Technical College—learning that is no longer limited by the traditional boundaries of space and time but will always be responsive to the needs of Georgia’s workforce.

This premier issue spotlights Moultrie Tech online student Rebecca Manning,  the Salem High School pilot project,  and some GVTC updates.

I hope that you will find Velocity both interesting and informative.

Student Success Story - Mom's a Computer Nerd!

By Emily Nichols, Online Course Instructor, Moultrie Tech

“Mom, you’re getting to be a regular computer nerd!”  When Rebecca Manning heard this remark from her teen-aged daughters, she smiled sweetly.  Though her daughters’ intent was playful (with a hint of sarcasm), Becky couldn’t help but feel complimented.

At the beginning of 2001, Becky could have been considered “computer-challenged”, but now she is on her way to outsmarting even the savviest teenaged “techie” by taking computer courses online through the Business Office Technology program at Moultrie Technical College. In her Introduction to Microcomputers on-line course, Becky has fine-tuned her computer skills and learned about transfer of information via the information highway.

GVTC Partners with Salem High School

Through a pilot program between Salem High School and the Georgia Virtual Technical College, students at Salem High School in Rockdale County, Georgia (www.rockdale.k12.ga.us/shs) are enrolled in online computer courses at Central Georgia Technical College in Macon and DeKalb Technical College in Clarkston.  Students take the courses over the Internet as part of their regular school day and earn credit at their local high school and at the technical colleges through a Dual Enrollment agreement.

e-HOPE

The Georgia Student Finance Commission has implemented the electronic HOPE application (http://hpunix.gsfc.org/ha.htm) on their website.  The e-HOPE application can be used at this time to apply for Summer 2001 and beyond.  It cannot be used for a school term that begins prior to Summer 2001.

It is quicker and easier than completing and processing a paper HOPE application.  A student only has to complete the e-HOPE once in a lifetime and it will serve as a HOPE application regardless of the school the student attends, regardless of whether the student is applying for a Scholarship to seek a degree at any undergraduate level or whether the student is applying for a Grant to seek a diploma or certificate, and regardless of how long the student attends school or the length of his or her break in enrollment.

The e-HOPE application adds another measure of convenience for the online student.
