Debbie Dlugolenski, President

This fall marks GVTC’s fourth anniversary.  Since going online in the fall of 1998, GVTC has served over 40,000 students.  Online learning has opened a world of opportunities and rewards for students seeking an alternative to the traditional classroom experience.  In this issue, we will explore the experiences of April Sasser and Jennifer Montgomery; two people who wanted to move forward with their education but found their options limited by the demands of every day life.

Our first article focuses on April Sasser who definitely needed an alternative to classroom courses.  With the demands of FIVE children, a house, and a husband, some doubted if April could ever complete her program of study. In September of 2002, April will graduate with a Diploma in the Business /Legal Office Specialist and a Certificate in Paralegal.  At a recent visit to the Department of Labor, April told her personal success story.  DOL staff was so inspired that they asked her if she would give a motivational speech to a group who was working toward their GED.    April has given one speech and plans to return on a regular basis.

Jennifer Montgomery, one of the first students who enrolled at GVTC in 1998, shares how she is reaching her goal of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).  Working at a job that sometimes required twelve hour shifts didn’t leave Jennifer much time to pursue her career.  Through GVTC, she was able to take a course anytime, day or night, at her convenience.  Jennifer graduated in June with an Associate Degree in Nursing.

These student achievements demonstrate the value of access to 24/7 education.  GVTC, through its system of 34 technical colleges, will continue to expand online offerings to provide accessible, affordable and flexible education opportunities.

Student Success Stories:
"Metamorphosis of a Dream"

April Sasser, the mother of five, thought she would never get out of dead end jobs, and calls her experience with GVTC the “Metamorphosis of a Dream.”  Having four children and another on the way, April’s aspirations and hopes of attending college were dim.  After being a “domestic engineer” for the better part of ten years, April says “I became consumed with the desire to heighten my level of knowledge by furthering my education, broadening my horizons and forever be released from the depths of dead end jobs. Student Success Stories:

"One of the First"

Jennifer Montgomery was one of the first students who enrolled at GVTC in 1998.  She knew she wanted to go to college, but the demands of a full-time job didn’t allow her time to attend classes on campus.  GVTC was just the ticket she needed to pursue a medical career.

In Jennifer’s words, “I didn't even know where to begin.  It seems like a long time ago that I began taking GVTC classes.  I wanted to go to college and I knew that I wanted to do something in the medical field. . . More...

Faculty Tip
Communication is Key

Instructor communication is the key to making online education a rewarding experience for the student.  Interacting routinely with the student on the first day of class and daily through the drop/add period reassures the student of the instructor’s concern for his/her educational outcomes.  Responding promptly to student e-mails and providing timely feedback to assignments and tests keeps the student engaged and active in the class.   Other hints for communicating with the student are to maintain office hours at different times of the day to be accessible to working students, to post lack of availability when sick or traveling and to inform students of your weekend e-mail policy.  By providing adequate instructor communication, the student is ensured of a successful online experience.
