GVTC Updates
In the latter part of 2002, I was asked to participate in a higher education mission with the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, little did I know that it would mean traveling to Iran! As part of a mission to improve Iranian higher education, Iran invited the U.S. National Academy of Sciences to send a group of U. S. academics to Iran. The U.S. State and Treasury departments approved the trip and I and seven other team members traveled to Iran on October 26, 2002. The focal point of our stay was Tehran, but some of our meetings also took us to other surrounding communities in Iran. We attended conferences, meetings and other academic events to help us create a strategy of education, address the integration of research and education, technical training and distance learning.
However, my most memorable experience was the Iranian people; the faces of joy, laughter and excitement beneath a shadow of heavy social and economic restraints. I cannot begin to describe this awe-inspiring experience in words, so I have gathered an array of photographs that I hope will give you a feel for the country and its people. I hope this brief look at Iran in pictures, will inspire us all to encourage the use of education to build relationships throughout the world.

GVTC President Goes Global
Iran in Pictures
The word “Global,” takes on a whole new meaning for Georgia Virtual Technical College’s president, Debbie Dlugolenski. Ms Dlugolenski was a member of a team of educators who, upon the request of the National Academy of Sciences, visited Tehran, Iran to help the Iranians formulate a strategy for higher education.
In preparation for the visit, Ms. Dlugolenski went through a slight transformation as she worked to adhere to the cultural standards of the Iranian culture. Head coverings, long sleeved tops, muted colors and other apparel were needed in order for Ms. Dlugolenski to comport with the Iranian culture. If you don’t recognize Debbie in some of the pictures; just look a little closer. See the pictures....
