Debbie Dlugolenski, President

We are excited about the phenomenal growth that has occurred at GVTC.  Student enrollment has more than tripled since Spring 2000, and course offerings have increased by nearly 150%. (See charts.) And, our retention rate ranges between 76-80%, much higher than the national average of 50%

Why the astounding success?  Many factors are involved, but the bottom line is excellent instruction and a commitment to serving students.  A great deal of credit for our success must go to both technical college instructors and staff who advise, assist and support “virtual students” via telephone and email.  They are making success possible for so many who would not be able to attend traditional classes.

This month’s newsletter highlights our first foray into non-credit instruction via a three-way partnership between GVTC, Georgia Quick Start, and BellSouth Corporation which allows us to offer Basic Electricity for Telecommunications; information on Blackboard training that should enlighten and encourage current faculty to give it a try; and be sure to read our Student Success Story on Byron Trivett, a remarkable young man with a plan for the future!

Student Success Story -
Valedictorian Goes Online with
DeKalb Tech and GVTC

As the 1999 Valedictorian of Newton County High School, Byron Trivett’s straight A’s and high SAT scores gained him acceptance for admission at the Georgia Institute of Technology and other prestigious colleges.  So when he enrolled instead in Computer Programming at DeKalb Technical College, some people were a little surprised.

BellSouth, Georgia Quick Start &
GVTC Online Connection

BellSouth, Georgia Quick Start, and Georgia Virtual Technical College have teamed up to make the BellSouth Basic Electricity for Telecommunications Course available online through Georgia's technical colleges.

The Basic Electricity course was first offered online by eight technical colleges through GVTC in March: Athens Tech, Atlanta Tech, Coosa Valley Tech, DeKalb Tech, Griffin Tech, Lanier Tech, Okefenokee Tech and Valdosta Tech.  Additionally, Atlanta Tech and DeKalb Tech offered onsite classes using their campus computer labs.
