Medical Arts, Allied Health, and Health Technologies are all terms used to describe careers in the health care profession.  Jobs in this area run the gamut from Radiology Technologist, Respiratory Therapist, Medical Transcriptionist, Dental Hygienist, Medical Receptionist, Paramedics, and Surgical Technology to name just a few.  One important element in the education and training required of these important, highly technical, caring professionals is that many of the general core courses and occupational core courses are available online through GVTC.

Featured in this issue of Velocity: two graduates of the Medical Transcription program from Northwestern Tech who completed their courses totally online; a student in the Medical Receptionist program at North Georgia Tech who combined on-campus and online courses to reach her career goals; and, the online Mammomography program at Coosa Valley Tech which gives Radiologic Technologists the opportunity to study and prepare to sit for the national registry exam to perform mammograms.

These articles show what life-long learning is all about.  Life is full of transitions; from losing a job due to downsizing and taking advantage of the opportunity to start a new career, to changes in work schedules and home life due to the arrival of children, and to becoming more proficient and earning new certifications in your current field of employ.  When one goal is reached, there is another to be set and achieved.  The online courses offered through GVTC from the state’s 34 technical colleges enable individuals to realize their goals without facing the traditional barriers of time and place.

We are pleased to present these articles featuring a few of our students, instructors, and programs.  To find our more about our extensive general core and occupational specific course offerings in the health care field, just go to www.gvtc.org.
