Debbie Dlugolenski, President

In this quarter’s Velocity, we spotlight a new allied health program, Medical Billing Clerk Technical Certificate, offered at Middle Georgia Technical College.  This year-long program consists of six classes: Introduction to Computers, Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, Beginning Document Processing, Medical Billing Coding Insurance and Advanced Medical Coding. Upon completion of the program, students could obtain employment as billing clerks, insurance specialists, patient account representatives, entry-level medical records coders, insurance claims processors, and insurance collection specialists.  Billing specialists work closely with financial and managerial areas of the health care agency.  The duties can range from collecting patient insurance information to resolving billing problems between the office, patient and insurance company.  Entry level medical billing clerks can make up to $10 an hour.  Discover more about the Medical Billing Clerk Technical Certificate offered in our online program catalog.

We continue to be excited about our partnership with SMARTHINKING which offers our students access to around-the-clock tutoring and academic assistance in both math and English.  For more information about online tutoring, click on SMARTHINKING.

Visit the new Learner Support Center on our website to discover a wealth of resources to support the online student. You will encounter career resources, library resources, life skills tips, student services information as well as a writing center to meet your academic, career, and individual needs.

We hope you enjoy reading this quarter’s newsletter.

Details Make the Difference
Medical Billing Student Lisa Petto

When Lisa Petto discovered that Middle Georgia Technical College was offering the Medical Billing program online, she enrolled immediately because she enjoys work that is very detailed and medical billing is certainly that, and since the program is online, she was able to continue her full-time job.

Lisa completed her program in three quarters and is currently employed as a medical billing specialist in an internal medicine practice where she completes pre-certifications and referrals, two tasks that require attention to details.  “It’s a very rewarding career with great advancement opportunities including coding specialist, auditor and insurance clerk.  You can work 9 to 5 or be an auditor and travel, and the pay scale is great depending on what you’re looking for in a career,” Lisa says.  Find out more about the online Medical Billing program.

Virtual Learner Support
Learner Support Center

Learner support is essential to meeting the academic, career and individual needs of all learners, but especially the online learner.  The Georgia Virtual Technical College (GVTC) recognized the importance of offering support to the virtual learner, and through suggestions by students, has developed a Learner Support Center for the online student.

The GVTC Learner Support Center creates a learner community that encourages online interaction among peers, prevents isolation by providing human contact and promotes learner success.  It offers resources such as academic advising, career services, library resources, life resources, student services information, tutoring services and a writing center all in one convenient place so the online student, with just a click of the mouse, has essential resources quickly available.
